Yes.
You need to copy the vlan.dat file or just recreate the vlans on the switch that you are moving to unless you are using VTP for vlan administration.

HI Nativevlan,
I dont know how to do that ,do you have a quick way to do so ,and maybe some reading ?

If it's a standalone switch in server or transparent mode, the VLAN's will be in the running-config.
If you're in a multi-switch environment and using VTP, the VLAN list will be pulled off a VTP server.

do a "dir nvram" to check the file name, it's possible to change the vlan.dat.
copy nvram:vlan.dat tftp
http://www.cisco.com/en/US /products/ hw/switche s/ps5213/p roducts_te ch_note091 86a0080a49 dbf.shtml
If it's just a few vlans it would be easier to recreate them.

HI all
the swith is a frount end to the internet for 24 different business ,ie keeping them from each other.
so from what you say the running-config should do the job if I read it right.

If when you do a "show vtp status" you see "VTP Operating Mode: Transparent" or "client" then simply copying the running-config to the tftp server is all you need to do.
If you see the operating mode is "Server", then you'll also need to copy the vlan database.
"copy flash:vlan.dat tftp"

Another thing you can do it copy your config to a tftp server and move it that way, or just create a log file from a hyperterminal session, copy the text, and paste the config into the router.

HI all , users wont let us pull the switch for now, but I have one more queston , if you would like me to place another queston Iam happy to do so ...
any way - the switch is in server mode , so if I put the switch into mode mode will it effect the switch in that could I lose the config , / will it ry and load from the server , witch is NO LONGER on site ?

First off, in VTP server mode, the config and the VLAN database are two separate things. Totally unrelated.
Second, if it's in server mode, do NOT change it to client mode! You can change it to transparent mode, but don't change it to client mode.

HI All,
so putting the switch into mode ,mode will not cause any problem and I can still copy off the
running-config & vlan by:-
copy running-config tftp
copy flash:vlan.dat tftp
reboot the switch and should be ok ?

Why are you going to reboot the switch?
And before you reboot or power down the switch, if you want it to still be functional in it's current location, you better issue a "copy run start" first.

we need to backup the switchs config on to a replacement unit
we don't have the current passwords , so we need to do a password recovery Via the power off/on mode look at the running-config to get the enable password .
then enable & copy the configs off to the tftp server or if needed reset the passwords.
I am just conserned doing so with this switcg may lose the current config as its in server mode and the server is gone...

There is no way to know.
It is possible the configuration has been saved. But without getting into privileged mode, you can't be certain.
