Joseph Salazar
Had a 2003SBS Server Crash and Die.....For Life

I Have a New 2008 Server and wish to attach the same computers

to the New Server Without haveing to go into Computer Name and

Do a Change from one domain and join the new one....

In the past when I do this it Causes Lots of issues with USERS loosing profile info.

Is there a way I can attach the existing WinXP SP3 and Win7 Pro Comtpuers to the new server

without loosing Profile info?

You can't join the computer to the new domain without the new DC knowing about it.

What is easier is to join the computer to the new domain and have the user sign in. The rename the user's directory under c:\documents and settings by adding a .bak extension or something. Then rename the original users directory to the new user name.

Because it is a different domain, this might not work as well as if it was the same domain. So if the above doesn't work, you can also rename everything back and just copy over the desktop, documents and start menu. That should cover most things.

New domain and new user accounts also means new SID's so you will have to migrate the profiles, not just rename them. (However you can often get away with copying contents from the old profile directory to the new one)
