Instant search is not active in Outlook 2007. When I go to Tools, Instant Search, Search Options, the options are all graded out.

What is the host machine (Windows 7, Vista, or XP) and do you have Indexing enabled on the host machine?

Also, is the Windows userid a member of the administator's group when trying to set the options in Outlook 2007 (or to put it another way, did a Group Policy by someone disable the search). .... Thinkpads_User

if its an XP machine, you need to install this update to enable Windows Search 4.0 (KB940157) - http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=23.  I would suggest you disable the tool-bar and remove the Search icon from the start-up group, as it can bog down older XP systems, and just needs to be installed and the service running for Outlook 07 to recognise it and allow searches to be done.

if its Vista or 7 then you have an issue with the in-built search function & index options.  let us know which.

Windows 7 pretty much takes over the Search function, so make sure Indexing is enabled and Outlook is one of the choices for Indexing.    .... Thinkpads_User

Outlook should appear usually 2nd on the list in Indexing Options, from the Win 7 Control Panel.  if not then click Modify add the app to the list (with Outlook closed).  Doesn't/shouldn't need admin rights if it's listed in the Indexing Options.
