Hi,

the "3" in syslog(3)  is short for the manpage section "3" which deals with subroutines.

The syslog(3) manpage consequenly contains among many other info this statement:

The subroutine syslog() generates a log message, which will be distributed by syslogd(8).

Subroutines are meant to be called by other programs, written e.g. in C or C++.

Issue "man syslog 3" to see the full manpage.

All descriptions of the manpage sections::

        1
             Indicates user commands and daemons.
       2
Indicates system calls and kernel services.
       3
            Indicates subroutines.
       4
Indicates special files, device drivers, and hardware.
       5
            Indicates configuration files.
       6
            Indicates games.
       7
            Indicates miscellaneous commands.
       8
            Indicates administrative commands and daemons.
