I tried installing a wireless printer on a windows 7 computer I had just cleaned from a lot of viruses.  THere is and old printer grayed out and some times its a an actual description of a dell v510 and some time its letters and number.  Every time i delete it either goes away and comes right back, or doesn't go away all.  It will switch between its description or the numbers and will never print,

When I go to install the wireless printer trough the wizard it cant find the printer at all.  I use the software it that is supplied or I download and it keeps keeps giving me the same error every time saying  "failed to create printer object ....The specified port is unknown(1796).

Then Message is attached below.  I have removed the software and tried installing mutilple times and no luck.  Any input would greatly appreciated.  this is kind urgent so she may do her school work.
Thanks,
Delitso

Have you tried instally the printer manually? That is, Printers -> Add printer -> Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer -> your computer will search for available printers to add.
During the installation, click "Install driver" if prompted -> maybe here you will need the CD with the drivers.

Please let me know if it works. If not, maybe we could try to clean the registry, to completely remove the old one...

yes i have.  I even tries to do it by IP and when it goes to load the driver or the printer it gives that error.  and it wont auto find the printer during the search while the other machine thats right next to it running win xp found it
It seems that something is corrupt. Try to clean the registry, for instance with CCleaner. Take a look to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers\...
There you will see the printers installed. If the ghost printer is already there, remove the registry folder (of course, backup first of all, exporting that branch to a file). Othe registry entries to check are:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Providers
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Devices
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\PrinterPorts

Open Computer -> Manage to check the installed devices. If you find the printer (maybe with a warning), remove it from there too. Finally, run Hijackthis (although it is normally for malware) or something similar to check if there is a part of the DELL printer program which is being auto-executed with the computer or logon.

Worked great thanks.  Found the ghost printer and the other printer preventing the reinstall in the first registry key.  Deleted them, then ran hijack and the printer installed worked fine.

Thank You Very Much
