Microsoft does NOT provide general Configuration Management solutions though it does have CM solutions for software management (Systems Center Configuration Manager 2007) and software development (Visual Studio Team Foundation Server).

"System Center Configuration Manager 2007 is used by more enterprises than any other client management solution. It comprehensively assesses, deploys, and updates your servers, client computers, and devices across physical, virtual, and mobile environments. Optimized for Windows, it is the best choice for gaining enhanced insight into and control over your IT systems."

"Foundation Server is a full software configuration management solution that offers release management, version control, work item tracking, and reporting functionality."

MS also publishes their best practices on CM through Microsoft Solution Framework (MSF) 4.0, "a set of practical guidance for everyday IT practices and activities, helping users establish and implement reliable, cost-effective IT services. It encompasses the entire IT lifecycle by integrating"

DO CMDB automatically colalte settings from servers/workstations (what other devices would be in there - plaese state) - or must they be manuallly entered by hand?

technically, CMDB itself does not scan the network and automatically collect the inventory information.

however, commonly the central management server of a CM system may initialise the request to all managed computers (or hosts), and the agent software running on the client computers will scan the hardware and/or software on behalf of the management server then send the info back and update the CMDB, accordingly.

therefore, if a CM system is in place, for most inventory information, you no need to manually input it.

please be aware that some asset information for management purposes is normally to be manually updated, such as purchase price, support department, cost centre and etc, as they are not available from the automatic inventory discovery.

hope it helps,
