Hi
I am trying to connect a 500GB HDD with NTFS file system to my windows 2003 server, which has all my data. But, its showing the file system of that drive in Disk management as RAW file system, and its not at all showing in My Computer window. Its well displaying all the data and well accessible in WinXP and Win7. Why is it happening? and what is the solution for this? please help me. And I don't have a back up of my data.
Thanks in advance

This is typically one of two things

1. Drive failure .. (take it to a recovery lab with $500++)
2. The disk was previously attached to a motherboard with an embedded RAID controller.  Most RAID controllers carve out a few MB at the beginning of the disk for metadata.  So the actual data starts at a different offset.  The same can be true if your new system has a RAID controller and the previous one didn't.   Bottom line, physical block #0 is now a logical block #0.  No easy way to fix this other than to buy some software and use a non-RAID controller & migrate the data (or put the disk back and then move the 500 GB worth of data to another computer and then copy it back using a non-RAID controller.

#2 means no data loss.  So look at the manuals for the new & old systems and see if either one has a raid controller.

dlethe - how can i make sure that i am using a non-RAID controller when i am copying back to my HDD?
Shbasha - yes I am using USB external HDD.

Actually it was connected to windows 2003 server, it was working fine. i have 2 HDDs in my windows 2003 server one of them was installed the OS and the second one is with the data (this the drive that i am taking about). few days back windows 2003 server got corrupted and i had to move that 500GB HDD to another winXP PC, when i connected to XP i inserted the 500GB HDD into an external USB disk and used it. Now, windows 2003 server is back and trying to connect the HDD to it then i got this prob.

Plug it back into the XP machine, copy the data off. Put it in the 2003 server. Partition and format. Copy the data back.

Better to back up all your data, then troubleshoot the disk

I am not sure whether or not the issue is metadata.  YOU have to look at the specs of the motherboards and/or the BIOS setup to see if either machine has an embedded RAID controller.  The other possibility, a failing HDD, should be investigated.  Seagate, WD, Hitachi, and the others all have freebie HDD diagnostics on their websites.    95% possibility it is one of these two issues.

But you managed to recover the data you wanted?

Their is any Chance loose the Data on my HDD If i delete those Files
I'm not sure, maybe...

Perhaps the best solution is to copy these data that you do not want to another disk or dvd
