Try starting Excel in Safe Mode:
Click Start, and then click Run.
Click Browse, and then locate the folder where Microsoft Excel is installed, as specified earlier in this article.
After you locate the Excel.exe file, click the file to select it, and then click Open.
At the end of the path in the Open box, type a space and then type /s so that the entire line appears similar to the following:
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /s

I have also seen Excel crash in the past due to a problem with a print driver.  Try changing your default printer to something like Microsoft XPS Document Writer if you have that as a test.

is it when you launch excel, or when you attempt to open a file?

If it's when you open a file, what is the file extension?
