sharepoint backups stuck

I am running sharepoint foundations 2010 and I don't know why, but the a backup job that I didn't even start is running and won't stop, it's just hung in the "in process" state.

I restarted all the services and I even restarted the server twice.  I don't know what else to do?

Any ideas?

Here's the spbackup.log, it said it finished successfully within like 2 minutes, so why is sharepoint still saying it's in progress?  It won't let me start another manual backup job or restore. spbackup.log

I've discovered that if I stop the current backup job running, by clicking on monitoring and then running jobs, there's always a "search backup and restore (pause) application xxxx-xxx-xxx server"

When I stop that job, my backup job seems to finish fine, so why does that start everytime time I start a manual backup job, it never used to do that before?

Check your application event logs (windows), specifically look for owstimer crashes (for some reason these show as info icons not errors!)
I recently had a similar problem to you where backup jobs would get "stuck" and UPS syncs get confused.
Turns out that the anti virus software on the server was playing havoc with the owstimer service which SP uses for timer jobs like backups. The work-a-round we did was to set folder exclusions for the AV scanner.

I looked in the app log, but I dont see any events with the source of "owstimer".  Where exactly do I look for that?
I don't have any AV software installed on this server.

I've had issues with the MSSQL$microsoft##SSEE internal datbase service on this server, so I disabled that service for the last month and I had no issues.  When talking to Symantec techs about my backups failing, they said to delete the service, so i deleted the service and it seems like days later is when this started.  is there a way to bring the service back?

I called Microsoft, so I will be working with the tech to fix the issue.  I looks like the culprit is the search feature has a problem.
