I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

>>> If the user opens a doc from with in the application (excell) the spreadsheets then pop open immediately.

So it appears to be a mapping problem and not an Office problem.

Are you mapping server folders with a script (NET USE Z: .... ) or by browsing?
Make sure the mapped folders are not Persistent (NET USE Z: /Delete /Persistent:NO).
Are the "some users" on a VPN connection?
Have you checked networking hardware to make sure duplex is correct and switches are running properly?

i had unplugged the sbs2003 server to make sure that the the users were using the new server.  I plugged it back in this morning. And the issue seemed to be  to resolved. I made sure that the sbs is not sharing any files.
Maybe I didnt let Ad and DNS replicate thoroughly....... I did make the new server(2k8) the GC and removed the GC from SBS2K3, all of the fsmo roles are on the new server.
My plan is to let things be for a week or so and then demote the SBS server.
All the users are on site no VPN, set up the mapped drives by browsing. Not using a uniform logonscript.

So it is a browsing/mapping issue as I thought it might be. "Maybe I didnt let Ad and DNS replicate thoroughly". Probably so.  I always use login scripts and avoid browsing/persistenc, and this may have contributed to the problem.  I am pleased to hear you have it resolved. .... Thinkpads_User
