I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I used to use:
K-9 from bluecoat.com. It's free.

http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

Now I use Norton Online Family. It's also free and is more convenient, since logs and configuration are stored in the cloud.

it depends on how much you want to control...

NetNanny is one of the most complete packages...  and it is easy to configure.

Compare with others in here:
http://www.netnanny.com/products/netnanny/details/value

website price is 39.99 but you can find it for 15 or less in other online stores...

In fairly recent experience, I found NetNanny to be ineffective, in that it generated too many false positives on its blocking, and I had to remove it.
