I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

...not really.  At least not in the way you envision it.

One common solution, though, is to use a Dictionary which allows you to associate a value with a key:

For instance, if you wanted to store string values, then you could do:
Public Class Form1

Private Variables As New Dictionary(Of String, String)

    Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
        Variables("empname") = "Idle_Mind" ' <-- Assign "Idle_Mind" to "empname"
    End Sub

    Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click
MessageBox.Show(Variables("empname")) ' <-- Retrieve the value associated with "empname"
    End Sub

End Class
