Windows 7 Service Pack Install Continually Failing with ERROR_NOT_FOUND(0x80070490)
Hi
I've got a standard Win 7 Professional machine which is working normally. The Windows 7 Service Pack install is failing with the error ERROR_NOT_FOUND(0x80070490) so I'm not sure where to begin troubleshooting it.
The OS is licensed with MSDN AA licence legally (I am a tutor at a Microsoft Academy) but recently I occasionally get the message about the software possibly being counterfeit which it's not, but I just mention it in case it is relevant.
OK I installed the service pack and it failed again with exactly the same error, so I need to move on to the other troubleshooting steps.

To nobus I ran sfc /scannow and it completed with the message 'Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations so I guess that means a clean bill of health as far as that is concerned.

You've already tried this? fastest fix is to boot into your o/s then install (upgrade) from your install disk (may take an hour)
then install the service pack.
0x80070490 is a known update error that plagued Vista users. Microsoft has only one solution for this and that is InPlace Upgrade or reinstall of the OS. Although it was happening mostly with Vista users, I have seen it happening with Windows 7 as well. If the SubInACL and scf /scannow does not do the trick then you will have to ensure backing up your personal data and complete a Inplace Upgrade or reinstall of Windows :( sorry

To the three people assisting me on this - many thanks for your help!
Just to be clear - as Michael has just said this is quite a serious procedure so I have done every troubleshooting step EXCEPT that one, as I need to get a Win7 DVD and ensure that I have a valid product key.
Thanks again to ve3ofa, Michael and nobus as it looks like this will be the solution that will work; I just need to work it through.

I've run out of time with this ticket as I'm quite busy and with a system restore procedure I wanted to just back up my PC properly and as it's my main family PC I don't want to take any risks, particularly as this fault can be fixed any time.
So I am going to accept the system repair as the solution and if and when I come to execute it, I will link it to this ticket should I need any help.
Many thanks for your help and support, but all three of you basically came to the same conclusion so I'm going to award the points equally accordingly, so many thanks to all of your input and have a relaxing Christmas.
