I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Have you thought about Google Apps.... High availability, 25gb mailboxes, shared calendars ........

errrr, yes I've thought about it... is google reading e-mails and using that data for other stuff?  am I too paranoid about google?  + gmail has been down, my friends went to fastmail.  is google apps more robust than gmail in terms of availability?

is google apps more robust than gmail in terms of availability?
Google Apps promises 99.9% uptime per their SLA at http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/terms/sla.html
Anything is subject to failure but Googles infrastructure is very solid, and there is a defined SLA for this as per papertrips link. There are a lot of videos on YouTube that show some insight into Googles datacentres and if availability is key it's well worth considering, you can get a trial remember.

As far as Google reading your emails is concerned I couldn't say however generally your I.T people have access to everything, for me I have access to a lot of confidential stuff but I really do not care to look at it.... For me the most important thing is that my clients networks run flawlessly around the clock, I am more interested in NOT getting a call at 2am than seeing what people are earning etc

If you are really concerned about someone intercepting your email you should generally look at some encryption, there are products that work with GMail like the old FireGPG which I do not think is available any more but a quick search using Yahoo (not Google :) ) will give some options for this.
