How do I automate a process to find out file types for .tmp files?
Recently our NAS server started crashing and with it, about 800 files all throughout our server were turned into .tmp files. We are able to open up those files using Microsoft Office software (Access, Excel, Word), but it's trial and error. I would like to run a script or program that could identify the file types for these files and resave the extension to help lead us on the path of restoration. Sadly none of the files were backed up, so we are stuck with only these files. Because the files are spread across our server, I also want to renamed file to be saved in the existing folder as that is the only way at this point we can identify the files.
All of the file names are now a seemingly random string of 8 letters and numbers.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is there software we can purchase? Scripts we can run? Please advise.
Thanks!
All of the files have been moved to a more stable environment and backup is now done regularly. We just need to solve the issue of identifying the files and their correct file types.

This helped, but didn't fully solve the solution as it remains to be a manually solution. Thanks!
