What driver does PHP use for mysql

I was looking at notes for the betas and RC of the new PHP 5.4 and I noticed this:
The mysql, mysqli and pdo_mysql extensions now use mysqlnd by default.
I'm wondering what driver mysql, mysqli, and pdo_mysql use currently (in previous version) as I thought it used mysqlnd already.

You can check by examining the output of phpinfo().  I'm pretty sure the mysql and mysqli extensions used mysqlnd in PHP 5.3, so the note may just be to point out the addition of pdo_mysql to that list.

There were 'client libraries' before.  See here: http://us3.php.net/manual/en/mysql.installation.php
