Excel 2007 lokced for editing by me and I am not using the document

.xls 2007 is locked for editing with my name and I don't have the document opened.  I have removed files in the temp folder under the \Documents and Settings\User Account\Local Settings\Temp and there is no Excel running in task manager for me to end.  I have re-booted as well but still get the same <filename>.xls is locked for editing  by "my name".

WTRog,

Could I suggest you close this for 0 points to yourself? If the problem recurs you can then open a new question (more likely to get attention than this one) with a link to this one.

Brian.

Try saving it as a different name. If it works, delete the original and rename the new one.

Hi, WTRog.

I'm not sure what's causing this, but in the folder where your file is, please check for a file with the same name but prefixed by "~$". If this exists then delete it and try to open the file.

("~$" files have file attributes of Hidden and System. Explorer defaults to not displaying these so let me know if you need me to talk you through making them visible.)

Regards,
Brian.

WTRog,

Even simpler, first check the file attributes for the file itself - it's not Read Only is it?!

Brian.

Brian,

No file in the folder with the "~s".  The file is read only for everyone except the person who created it or the password to edit has been supplied.  The person that created the file is the one receiving the error message that it is currently opened by her.

Flyster,

They saved it as copy of at the moment which is working.  I told them to hang on to the original for now until we can find out why she is receiving the locked for editing.

Thanks, WTRog. Couple of points...
(1) I assume "~s" was a typo for ""~$"?
(2) Are you sure that Explorer is displaying Hidden/System files?

Regards,
Brian.

Brian,

Now that you mention it I am not certain that explorer is displaying hidden.  I will check that tomorrow morning and get back with you.

Hmmm, what ever was causing the issue has cleared up.  I did check for hidden file in the folder but found none.

Sometimes, just reboot your PC works for me.  If your document is on a share folder it might be open on another PC.

Thanks, WTRog. I keep an eye on "my" questions for a couple of weeks after they're closed, so please feel free to post here if the problem recurs.
