Backup and Restore Exchange 2010 Data

Good morning.

I'm having many difficuties with my server and think it best to wipe it out and reload it.  I am running SBS 2011 Standard with Exchange 2010 .  How do I backup exchange so that when reload the server, I can import that data back into exchange to resume normal operations?

To be safe, I recommend Backup Exec 2010 R3 with the Exchange agent. Windows Server backup will probably work, but it does not have all the features Backup Exec has.
How do you achive your restore?
Do you want to backup both OS(including system state) and exchange database?
Or you want to take only exchange database backup? where you will reinstall OS/exchange as new installation ?

I have System Recovery 2011.  That's what BE is now called.  I've made a successful backup with it.  I forgot to mention I have moved the Exchange Data location to my D:  I just didn't know if it was as simple as repointing the Exchange data location back to D: after it was reloaded or not.  Is it that simple?  I'm finding out that server stuff is NEVER simple.  LOL

All important data is stored on my D: which is a RAID 1 750G HDD.  Exchange data is located there.

Thanks, TG.  But that's not the question.  The stores are already moved.  They've been that way for months.  I want to know when I reload my server from scratch, when I point my stores BACK to the D: where the files are stored, will everyone's exchange data be available?

If exchange is working properly today and you use System Recovery 2011 to take a GRT backup of Exchange (using the Exchange Agent), I would expect a full install and then a restore of Exchange should work.

Skipping steps in that process is a dangerous process. Do it by the numbers...

I haven't use System Recovery 2011 yet, but here are the basic steps to get a good backup. If you have never done this before and you have company mailboxes, you might be wise to get Symantec Support involvved and possibly an expert onsite before you perform this process.

These are the basic steps to follow in Backup exc 12/5 and 2010.
1. Install Backup Exec and run Live Update.
2. Determine which retention scheme you want to use and select that on the Media tab
3. Click the Device Tab and select the drive you want to backup to.
4. Click the Job Setup Tab and select Create New Job Wizard
5. In the Selections tab in the new job setup, select the DC you want to backup
6. On the General tab, name the job
7. On the Schedule tab set the job schedule
8. Click the Resource Credential tab and click Test All button (upper right corner) all should pass
9. On the Advanced Open File Tab, check to see Advanced Open File Option
10. Clock OK/Submit on all tabs and the job should be listed on the Job Monitor page.
11. Click the Job Monitor Tab, (if it's not running), right click the job and select Run Now.

This should get you about 90% of the way through the backup process. Hope it helps.

I'll advice you just export your mailboxes to pst files and save them to any external HDD or any safe location. Then run the SBS recovery  2011. I believe recovery will install your os and exchange again.So after this you will not be able to mount the database to it. But if you will have the pst's files for the users the you can easily create users in exchange and import the .pst files in it again.

I'm going to take a combination of your suggestions.  Althought the question was never answered, it is a method of getthing things taken care of.  This works for me because I only have 5 accounts.  Now if I were in a situation where I had 500, this would not be a solid solution.  

You know how you can just copy someone's .pst out of their profile onto an external device, wipe and reload their computer and then startup Outlook, create a .pst by not setting up an email account; then, you go to the data file location and paste the old .pst in and BOOM!, there's all of your email and contacts, etc....  That's what I was asking if we could do with exchange.  Copy the data files that are in the exchange store folders to a safe location.  THEN, wipe the machine and reload it, do all the updates, THEN, paste the exchange data (or point it back to where it was saved on an alternate drive) and BOOM!, there's all of my data on each profile.

I realize exchange is more complicated than simple Outlook when it comes to data files.  I just didn't know if there was a way to copy/paste the most current data before wiping the system and reloading it and putting that same data in a location where exchange already knew what was in each client's data folder on the server.

I'll experiment around and let you guys know what I find out.

The question was never fully answered.  A Yes, and here is how it's done or a No, that's not a stable way to acheive your goal or something of the sort.  I'll post back later if I find a solution that fits exactly what I"m looking for.
