Internet connection speed

I'd like (just for interest) to check the speed of download and upload over my internet connection.  Just to see how it compares with the 'promised' rates.
Is there a freeware tool or built in utility (Windows 7) that can do this for me?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Theres a ton of free speed tests online, just google it.  You should go to your ISP site though to see if they have a speed test.  Remember, they have a scale that still falls in the good connection range.  For ex.  if you're maying for a 7.8m down and a .768 up..your speed test could come back as a down of 4.3 and your ISP will still consider that within range of operating correctly.

And the 'promised' rates are just between you and your ISP.  Anything past that will not even be 'promised' because your ISP has no control over other peoples connections.
