Exchange 2010 Mailbox Role fails to install

I've done all the prerequisite work (as far as all I've read online), and the CAS and Hub roles installed just fine, but the mailbox role fails with the following error:

This error is when your AD is prepared for ex2010 SP1 but you try to install ex2010 RTM MBX
If you run now setup.com /preparead will probably get this error :
Setup encountered a problem while validating the state of Active Directory:
The Active Directory organization configuration version (XXXX) is higher than
Setup's version(XXXX). Therefore, PrepareAD can't be executed

Try the following :
1. remove MBX role: setup.com /mode:uninstall /role:mailbox
2.Make sure the Prerequisites are met > http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb691354.aspx
3. Run SP1 to upgrade CAS and HUB Roles to Sp1
4. install MBX role (from SP1  folder) with setup.com /mode:install /role:mailbox

Can you please eloborate on the issue.
Is it a fresh exchange 2010 environment or any upgrade from previous version?

Currently running Exchange 2003(single server).  Just trying to install Exchange 2010 on new hardware for a transition. As far as I know, all prerequisites have been met, but I have no idea why this would be failing.

Can I safely attempt to run all prerequisites again at this pont (setup /PrepareAD, service packs, etc...)?

2. Local Administrators

Where can I find the "Exchange Organization Administrators" group?  I don't see it in ADU&C or on the local 2010 Exchange Server.....

Make sure you have advanced view on for AD. I dont think the container the Exchange groups sit in are visable by default. Its under the "Microsoft Exchange Security Groups" container. Called Organization Management.

tenoverAuthor Commented:
Confirmed that the domain admin account I'm using is in the "Organization Management" group and a member of the local Admin group.
What's odd is when I look in the new 2010 Exchange Management console, it sees all the users and shows an unmounted database.

The Organization Management is the 2010 version of Exhange Org Admins (2007

Is it safe to try and run the setup /PrepareAD again on the new 2010 Exchange server?

SriHarsha KTechnical Services SpecialistCommented:
So you able to install MailBox Role now?
And after the installation.the database is in unmounted state??

Try to mount the database.

tenoverAuthor Commented:
No, Mailbox role fails.  But when I look in the management console, I see an unmounted database, but it under "Organization", not "Server".

On which windows are you installing the Exhange 2010?

If its possible try to start the installation from the start with all the prerequisites and the necessary permissions.

I'm installing on a brand new Windows 2008 R2 server.  Maybe I'm missing a prerequisite, but if it's the same few you keep sending me, I've done them all already.  Not sure how to start from scratch, just remove exchange from add/remove programs and start over?  Is it going to mess up anything it's already done, like the connection to Exchange 2003?

A Setup failure previously occured while installing the Mailbox role.  Either run Setup again for just this role or remove the role using Control Panel

Running the uninstall now, but it seems like it's stuck at 38%....Been there for 5 minutes or so.  this is a brand new server with nothing else installed except Ex2010.

Prerequisites

1.)Make sure that the functional level of your forest is at least Windows Server 2003, and that the schema master is running Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or later. For more information about the Windows functional level, see Managing Domains and Forests.

My Forest is functioning at Windows Server 2003. The SchemaMaster is running Windows 2008 R2.

The full installation option of Windows Server 2008 with SP2 or later or Windows Server 2008 R2 must be used for all servers running Exchange 2010 server roles or management tools.

This server came with Windows Server 2008 R2 preinstalled.

For all server roles other than the Edge Transport server role, you must first join the computer to the appropriate internal Active Directory forest and domain.

This server was joined to the domain a few days ago with no issues.

Am I missing something?  Should I try to run the /prepareSchema and /prepareAD again or just install Exchange 2010 SP1 like you suggested???

Can I download JUST Exchange 2010 SP1 and install the mailbox role from there or do I need to download the entire "Exchange 2010 WITH SP1" image? Thanks for your help, it's making sense now....

For the Prerequisites just expand the :
Install the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system prerequisites
Windows PowerShell > Import-Module ServerManager
Windows PowerShell >Add-WindowsFeature NET-Framework,RSAT-ADDS,Web-Server,Web-Basic-Auth,Web-Windows-Auth,Web-Metabase,Web-Net-Ext,Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console,WAS-Process-Model,RSAT-Web-Server,Web-ISAPI-Ext,Web-Digest-Auth,Web-Dyn-Compression,NET-HTTP-Activation,Web-Asp-Net,Web-Client-Auth,Web-Dir-Browsing,Web-Http-Errors,Web-Http-Logging,Web-Http-Redirect,Web-Http-Tracing,Web-ISAPI-Filter,Web-Request-Monitor,Web-Static-Content,Web-WMI,RPC-Over-HTTP-Proxy -Restart

I would download both.
- download JUST Exchange 2010 SP1 to upgrade CAS/HUB to SP1 since they are OK installed
-download the entire "Exchange 2010 WITH SP1" image and from the setup folder run :
setup.com /mode:install /role:mailbox

You are welcome.
Also to be on the safe side and when you have ex2010SP1  installation files donwloaded run the following commands in that order before installing the MBX role :
(from the SP1 install folder) >
setup.com /PrepareSchema
setup.com /PL
setup.com /PrepareAD
setup.com /PrepareAlldomains
All the above should succed with no errors ... if it fails post the error. Do not try to install anything.

Installed SP1 to update CAS and Hub roles no problem.  When I run the above setup commands from Powershell using the ISO image that was downloaded, it never really finishes or gives an error.  I'm running this FROM the new Exchange 2010 server.  When I run them, it says "Welcom to Microsoft Exchange 2010 Unattended Setup"...Then "Copying Setup Files" and a cursor/prompt immediately after that.....No "Succeeded" or anything.....

So should I try to install the mailbox role using setup.com /mode:install /role:mailbox  at this point or not?

tenoverAuthor Commented:
Tried to run it from a regular command prompt and it shows the files loading to 100% but then errors about because its a 16-BIT app running on Windows x64......

Check this out. This person had the exact same issue and it turned out to be a bad ISO image. Read the very end of the thread. Is there a way for me to completely remove Exchange 2010 and start from scratch on this new server without breaking anything?  Or is there an easier way to do it?  I'm downloading the entire EX2010 with SP1 all over again. It's 4GB, so l'll let it download overnight and get going tomorrow, just wondering what the easiest method to start over would be. Don't want to break anything in regards to the current 2003 Exchange server. I don't mind starting from scratch on this new server though. Again, your help is MUCH appreciated!

AAAhhhhh.......Thank GOD.  This all turned out to be bad media.  I re-downloaded Exchange 2010 with SP1 overnight, mounted the image this morning and the installed the mailbox role without any issues.  Thank you for your help, it was much appreciated.  I'm giving you the points since you stuck in there and your instructions were actually what led me to the final answer.
