Photoshop Error message "No pixels are more than 50% selected. the selection edges will not be visible

I just used the lasso tool to select an area of a photo I'd like to fix and when I completed selecting the shape, I received the message:

"No pixels are more than 50% selected. the selection edges  will not be visible.

How can I select this given area.  It's just a small simple area of the picture.

If you get the error message telling you Warning no pixels were selected or Warning no pixels are more than 50% selected try setting the feathering to a lower number setting.

It is also possible that you have a different layer selected, an empty one, and the selection does not find anything to change.

I lowered the feathering to 0.
There is no layer.  I just opened up the picture and started to use the lasso.

Okay confession:  I'm a photoshop newbie.
I just tried using the clone stamp tool and it's not working at all.  I obviously did something that I didn't realize doing.
Did I inadvertently add a layer?
-- I just saved  this photo as a photoshop format file.  Did that change the capability of the file from when it was merely a JPG file?

Keep Window>Layers open. It's a key tool when working in Photoshop. (Everyone is a new bee in Photoshop at the beginning).

You have now at least two layers in PS since it wanted to save as psd instead of jpg.
