compaq nw800 not recognizing CD drive

Hi,

I have a laptop on which the CD-ROM drive is no longer recognized though it appears to be operational.  I can hear it spin up.  If I look in the device manager I do not see it.

Also, trying to boot form it isn't working.  Any suggestions as to what I can try would be appreciated.

Hi,

Thanks for the input.

To clarify, when I try to boot from the CD I keep getting a non-system disk error when the system disk is in the drive.  I haven't looked at the BIOS and will try to do so.  I also haven't checked the drive connection but is this a likely culprit?

or replace the drive - if it does not boot from it - you're sure the cd is bootable?
I really couldn't get to the bottpm of this but the experts comments were helpful in determining that I am having a hardware problem.  Masqueraid's comment about a CD being bootable in another machine but not in the laptop was key.  dbrunton's comments lead me to a do-it-yourself guide on microsoft that confirmed two things one that I couldn't repair the registry by the methods suggested and more important that the system was too old to invest the effort.  And while I never did look at the Bios, it's something I'll think about if something like this crops up in the future.  In the end it will be easier and more cost effective to replace the system than repare it.  I never experienced the sense that my kids grew up too fast, but brand new computers sure get old fast.  Thanks for the advice.  It's appreciated.
