Good iphone aps for radio alarm so no point buying a alarm docking station?

Loads of docking options but few radio alarm types.
Are there good enough radio alarms out there to avoid getting a specific alarm versions?

Okay - with you now :)

If you look in the AppStore for 'alarm clock radio' there are a few to choose from.  Don't have any personally as I have one of these:

I couldn't agree more.  But it does have the standard iPod / iPhone connector, so it does work.  I bought a Universal Dock Adapter for the 4 series and it slots in happily.  If you consider that the iPod Touch is the same as the iPhone 4 - it just has the phone part missing.

Before I made my purchase I actually called Roberts Sales people to check that it worked, so you are not alone with your thoughts regarding a lack of iPhone mention - a serious omission !

what put doubt in my mind is the thickness of the iphone4 Vs ipod.

Will consider getting one still.

I can understand your doubt.  The Universal Dock Adapter is a piece of plastic that fills the hole in the top of the radio and has a hole that fits around the iPod dock connector, so that the iPhone / iPod fits snugly.  Without it - the iPhone will fit, but you have to fiddle / get the device in the right.  With it - it is a much easier process.  Apple sell them in 3's on their website.  I have two spare white ones!!
