Any standard RGB image in GIF or JPG.   Word can import BMP and WMF but they are not common formats on a Mac.

PNG is a good format as it can include vector and font information and transparency
JPEG is only good form photos and images as compression can affect quality.

Word will also allow you to use BMP & WMF and any other files (the same as Windows) but BMP tend to be very large files.

I don't see why you object to PDF as you can open in it in many programs, it also has great support for fonts and vector graphics which is perfect for scalable graphics. PDF is an industry standard for print and design and is very easy to use on Windows and OSX. I would always insist on a PDF version of the graphics (even if you get a PNG or JPG version too)
