Depends on the Laptop. Most laptops have a VGA output, newer ones might also have a DVI output or / and an HDMI output. Depending on what output you have just get a monitor that has the same input as your laptop's output.

Them just connect the Laptop to the monitor that way. The OS should then see the new display, and you can then, depending on the OS you have installed, use different configuration settings to extend your desktop to the external display. Once you have extended the display you can just drag those apps you want on the other display to that display. If you are going to take the PC on the road without the external display, make sure you disconnect the external monitor before turning the PC off. That will move the apps back to your internal display.

If your laptop have any connector for external monitor (D-SUB, HDMI or displayPort), you don't need any additional hardware, only proper cable. Settings for second monitor are depending from your video board in laptop.

If this is the case, if you want just some programs which you don't want to be on desktop, rather than going for a hardware, i would suggest you a cheaper option. Go for software.

there are various softwares and freewares which will split the desktop accordingly one of them is DoubleDesktop.exe

you will get two virtual desktops using this software..!!!
