Desktop shortcuts open wrong files...

Win 7...
User has several desktop shortcuts, to Word and Excel documents, IE, Word and Excel programs and couple other things...
When he opens a SHORTCUT to a file, Word opens and get an error message...
"Cannot open C:\program data\windows\start menu\programs\startup\micorosft office.lnk...The file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters or the file may be corrupt"...

If I hit the "OK" button in the error message, Word will open, but there will be nothing in the file...

No  matter which shortcut we hit, depending on the file the error message is more or less the same...

If I click on a FILE on the desktop, everything works correctly...
It is ONLY the shortcuts that give me grief...
If I go into the properties of the shortcut, it is pointed to the correct exe, or file as the case may be...

So...I pulled the drive and slaved it to another comptuer...on the other computer, if I go to problem HD, C:\users\john\desktop and
click on any of the shortcuts, everything works correctly...!!!

MBAM and Vipre scans are clean, Spybot found one misc adware...
Ran CHKDSK and shortcuts are still misbehaving...

So, same as before...if I click on the dekstop link to CCleaner, Word opens up...

I'm not sure how to trouble shoot this one...never seen anything like this before...and I'm hoping I don;'t have to rebuild it...

thoughts and ideas appreciated...

Follow the instructions on this page and utilize the link found on the subsequent list to restore the default LNK file association:

Windows 7 Default File Type Associations - Restore
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html

Once that is done reboot Windows and then test the shortcuts.  If the problem still persists, try creating a new shortcut to another file and see if that works properly.

Run5k...well, gave it a shot...
followed the directions, ran a couple fixes...nothing worked...
Checked my file assoc for .reg and it is set to registry editor...
then looked thru the file assoc listing and all the common file extensions are set
to the correct program...

Tried to open CCleaner with the desktop shortcut...still opens in Word...created a new shortcut for CCleaner,
still opens in Word...
I don;t think this is going to work...

So...researching...

If that still doesn't work, try dropping back to a previous snapshot of the operating system using the System Restore function:

How to Do a System Restore in Windows 7
Well...I threw in the towel...
I could get the exe file into the registry...but it wouldn't take any other registry repairs...
And with the exe repair, it still would not run an executable...

And there was no previous snapshot on the comptuer...

So I tried doing a repair install, and that didn;'t work...nothing changed...

So I got clients data off, and reinstalled Win 7 from scracth...

right now it's working fine...

thanx for the help Run5k...I believe I understood your directions ok...nothing unclear, it just didn;t work...
for whatever the reason...
Sorry to hear that things didn't work out better than that.

In the aftermath, the only other thing I would recommend is now that the system is fully fucntional again, ensure that the security software is up-to-date and that System Protection is configured to create restore points.

Best of luck in the future!
Wait a minute...were  you  just sitting there waiting for me to close this bugger out...???..:>)

Client had Kaspersky on it...pretty good AV in my opinion...

And I will set a restore point...hadn't been doing that as I had the understanding that Win 7 created them along the way...

Thanx for the help...
I'm online quite a bit!

Yes, the system should be automatically creating restore points triggered by significant events, such as the monthly Windows Update patches being installed.  Additionally, you can double-check the configuration of the System Protection settings and if you prefer, adjust the disk space usage to be a bit higher.
