Sybase License check throws same error every day almost sametime.

Hi Experts,

Can you please let me know why I am getting the same license error everyday and this is specific to some Server. I have 10 to 15 machines out of which I get it in one or two servers.

We had a similar a problem which turned out to be fixed by setting randomize_va_space and exec-shield kernel to zero.   There's a Sybase "solved case" about it.   Also see:

where it says:

On Linux RHEL Update 4.0 and greater, Adaptive Server version 15.x running on multiple engines requires the security feature Exec-Shield to be disabled. To disable Exec-Shield:

    Add the following lines in /etc/sysctl.conf:

    kernel.exec-shield=0
    kernel.exec-shield-randomize=0

    On RHEL Update 5.0

    kernel.exec-shield=0
    kernel.randomize_va_space=0

Hmm, maybe those params have different names on SUSE 11.    If you do:
ls /proc/sys/kernel/*shield* /proc/sys/kernel/*randomize*
do you see files there?

Also this directory has read and executable permission.
I tried to enable write permission but it denied.

So could not add files manually

These are not real files, but an operating system trick to let kernel settings appear as files to make it easy to check/set things.

If the files aren't in /proc/sys/kernel, then that would seem to indicate that your operating system doesn't support it.

Let's try another approach.  Run

sysctl -a | egrep 'randomize|shield'
to see if the settings exist in your operating system.   (if sysctl isn't in your path, run "locate sysctl" to find it).  If they don't, then I'm at the limit of my Linux knowledge.   You'll have to search to see if these settings exist in your operating system and how they can be set.

Ok, back to first principles. There's probably no point applying RHEL workarounds to a SuSE installation.

SuSE requires the following kernel patches (or higher):

kernel-smp-2.6.16.21-0.8
glibc-2.4-31.2

Check those first. Higher is fine, in fact higher is better. You don't say what hardware platform you're running SuSE on. If it's Itanium then you also need:

ia32el: ia32el-6.5-17.2 or higher

You also don't say exactly what ASE version you're using. If you're using the 15.5 baseline then it's definitely time to apply the latest EBF.

All the cases Sybase have on this include instructions for RHEL rather than SuSE. You may need to raise your own case with Sybase support.

Mostly I am having ESD#1 but I too have ESD#4 in other server and getting the same error.

We (third party) develop s/w for second party and 2nd party is selling the s/w to first party.
I am supporting 1st party with the help of 2nd party Remote Desktop setup.

I dont have acces to Sybase support and 2nd party is not willing to share the logins.
So I need your help to solve the cases.

I don't know enough about SuSE to say how significant that is, but if the Sybase install docs say you need a particular kernel option or patch which you don't seem to have, that sounds somewhat serious to me.

Unless the version Sybase mentions has been renamed or deprecated in the kernel you're using, you need to ask SuSE people about this. Until then, you may be in the position of having an environment unsupported by Sybase...

Shrug? I don't know? :)

Sybase says you need a kernel patch called "kernel-smp-2.6.16.21-0.8". You don't seem to have it. Until someone who knows SuSE well says "oh that was renamed" or "oh that's included in ...", you seem to not be running something Sybase says you need to run their product on your platform.

Sorry I can't help you with the SuSE stuff.

kernel.randomize_va_space=0 seems to be working fine in  most of the servers.
