Subfolders in Google Apps

I have a question regarding google apps.  How does the application handle subfolders under the inbox.  If the user has created folders for specific emails or events, are those synced just like the other folders and if the user is migrating from an local outlook profile, should the folders be imported during the intitial import.  If not, what is the best way to bring those folders over, using the Import/Export Wizard in Outlook or using the migration/import wizard in Google apps?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

IMAP will replicate the file structure.. pop3 will not.

If you run Google App Sync for MS Outlook (GASMO), the entire personal folder structure for email will sync with labels in Google Apps.

GASMO uses MSFT's own MAPI protocol to communicate between Outlook and Google Apps, so Google Apps looks like and is treated like an Exchange Server.

Caveats .... special characters in folder names, such as '/' can cause an error.  Also, if you have many many levels of nesting, the total character name of the path may exceed limits in GMail.

To run GASMO, your OS needs to be XP SP2 or newer.  You can use Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010, but whichever version you run should be current with updates and SPs from MSFT.

One of the users that is experiencing this issue has GASMO installed and the account is using MAPI but the folders are still not syncing.  Any ideas?

Does sync'ing occur with all folders, such as personal folders or just those folders under the Inbox?

Allen FalconCEO & Pragmatic EvangelistCommented:
If you use GASMO, the sync includes all personal folders.

Understand, but it did not for me. Maybe I chose the wrong file structure

Are you using GASMO or IMAP?

Is outlook running locally or are you using Citrix or terminal servers to a virtual desktop?

I am using GASMO.  Outlook is running locally.

The user in question is set up to use MAPI.

Locally or via Citrix or other virtual client.

The local cache kept by GASMO is at a location that may be transient when users are connecting via Citrix or other terminal server and VDI environments.

If this is the case, you will need to relocate the file and change the registry entry.

Outlook is running locally, not in any virtual environment or citrix.

I am not sure if Outlook will initiate an IMAP Sync for imported folders.  IMAP is usually point-forward only.  You may need to open the PST and copy them in (which disrupts dates)

Why not install GASMO?

Has the GASMO sync completed?  It will halt and restart if you disconnect.
