Hi Newmath,
I tried the following as suggested:
Download and install the Windows Update Agent          SUCCESS
then
1. net stop wuauserv   success
2. Register the Wups2.dll file =   success
3. net start wuauserv    =   automatic updates service started
However when I  tried Windows Update I got the error message 0x800A01CE and still can't update

Is BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) running and set to automatic? Check that under Services. Start it if it's stopped. If it is running, try reinstalling Windows Script: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8247

Hi Newmath
BITS was running but set to manual, I've re set to automatic and restarted. Still get Error number: 0x800A01CE when trying windows update
I tried re installing script via the link you gave me but got the message that my existing version was newer so no need to install this older one. Should I install it anyway?

Hello Deepak Giri,
I tried the link but it appears to be broken. However if it's for windows update agent I got that when following Newmath's suggestion but thanks anyway.
The second link took me to the Microsoft site to get the latest service pack (sp3) but I've got that already so I'm not sure how to proceed on that site

Hi Newmath,
sorry for the delay but I had to do everything manually as the automated Fix It on the site wouldn't work to reset Windows Update components. I registered everything successfully with the following exceptions:
regsvr32.exe mshtml.dll       =        mshtml.dll was loaded but the dllregister server entry was not found
regsvr32.exe wucltux.dll      =        loadlibrary (wucltux.dll ) failed- the specified module could not be found
regsvr32.exe wuwebv.dll     =     loadlibrary (wuwebv.dll ) failed- the specified module could not be found
Reset Winsock by typing netsh reset winsock  =  WARNING could not obtain host information from machine Gazza1. Some commands may not be available. The RPC server is unavailable. The following command was not found  reset winsock

I've requested that this question be closed as follows:

Accepted answer: 0 points for starbank's comment http:/Q_27506379.html#37327846

for the following reason:

Thank you newmath,<br />I went through all your suggestions in order again and I reset Windows Update components with a bit more care this time and &nbsp;restarted my computer (which I stupidly didn't do the first time) and I can now do a windows update. Thank you so much. You succeeded in 1 day to acheive what Microsoft couldn't do over the last 2 weeks.<br /><br />Just for your information: The updates have not been successfully installed in one go but I'm gradually getting there. (There were 26 updates to be installed and each time I do an update I get 2 or 3 successful installs an the remainder as 'failed to install' )but at least now I'm gradually getting there thanks to you. Thanks again,Starbank

Hi newmath,
thanks for all your help in solving this problem. I'm new to this site and I see that for some reason 0 points are showing whereas I gave you top marks for this solution and would have expected that you got maximum points. Is that something I should have done and if so how can I rectify this?
Thanks,
Starbank
