Dell inspiron E1705 laptop powers on to blank screen then shuts off after I removed the ram and then put it back in.

my dell inspiron E1705  laptop powers on with blank screen and has one solid number lock led while the caps lock and scroll lock led are flashing, this happes for about 1 minute then the laptop powers off, what is causing this? It happened after I removed the ram and put it back in. I discharged and removed the ac power, however I forgot to remove the battery. Could this have caused damage to the motherboard?

Remove AC power and battery. Then remove RAM and wipe connectors. Reinstall RAM and battery. Try to boot computer.

why would II need to wipe the connectors, the ram cards work fine and are brand new, or maybe Im not understaning what you are referring to when you say wipe connectors. Im thinking that may cause damage to the ram itself.

I tried wiping the ram stick but that didnt work. Here more of what im experiencing on the laptop, the number lock light stays solid while the caps locks and scroll lock light blinks about 45 times then the laptop powers off. Holding down the power button doesnt help anything and I cannot power the laptop off manually, it turns off on its own after about 1 minute.
You could blown up your memory or motherboard.
You can try to replace RAM. If this does not help most probably your motherboard is dead.
According to this link
http://www.bay-wolf.com/portpostcodes.htm
the pattern you are seeing on the Num Lock, Cap Lock, and Scroll Lock suggests a problem with the ram or ram slots.
You should use a soft rubber eraser on the contact points of the ram modules to clean them as suggested above.
Use only one ram module at a time and switch between slots to try and identify which module or slot may be defective. There is the possibilty that when you removed the ram with the battery still in it damaged the ram modules and they would need to be replaced.
The RAM may be in the slots improperly.  Are you absolutely sure you've pushed it in firmly, and locked it in?

Yes I tried putting the ram modules in different slots and one at a time, both the old ones and the new ones, I also tried cleaning the ram modules. And the ram is properly seated in the slots and pushed in firmly, I heard the clicks and its seated under the metal pieces on each side, and couldnt push it in any more firmly. None of that works. Im thinking my system board is dead because I forgot to remove the battery. But what are the chances of that happening and on both laptops!
Are you absolutely sure these modules are the correct ones for the machines?  (It seems very unlikely that you'd fry both boards by failing to remove the battery.  I mean, it's POSSIBLE, but incredibly bad luck.)

Yes these ram modules are the correct ones, I referred to the specifications on the users manual before purchasing them. They are the exact specifications. I also put the old ones back in and still the same issue.

Does anyone know anything about system boards and how you can tell if they have been damaged. Is there some type of indication? Would the unit not power on? My hard drive revs up, I can hear that.
What happens if you take all the memory modules out and try to boot?
Try this. Remove the battery and AC adapter and hold the power button down for 10 seconds. This will dissipate any electrical energy left on the motherboard. Put the ram back in the laptop, plug the AC adapter back in and try to start.

I get the same issue when I take out the ram modules and try to boot. I have also treid holding down the power button for 10 seconds to dissipate electrical energy (after this all happened), then put the ram back in, but still nothing.
Remove the items below in the order mentioned. Please be sure the computer is off and not connected to any power when removing these items.

1.
AC Adapter
Battery
Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds and then remove
Memory
Hard Drive
Hinge Cover
Keyboard
Disconnect the battery cable connector from the system board for 5 minutes and then reinsert

2.
Reconnect the Keyboard and Hinge Cover
Insert one stick of the original RAM
Reconnect the AC Adaptor and power on the Laptop

3.
If it powers on, try one of the new sticks of RAM and if successful add the other stick of RAM

Note: Remember to disconnect the AC Adapter and press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds before removing and reinserting the RAM

4. Reconnect the Hard Drive and Battery

Good Luck

i tried removing everything mentioned and added new ram, nothing. Are laptops designed to  power on to bios without any ram?
When the RAM is removed you should normally hear audible beeps emitting from the system. The only thing I can suggest now is to remove and reseat the CPU using new Thermal compound. You may as well clean the Heatsink while you are at it. If that doesn't work, then yes you may have caused damage to the motherboard, as there would have been Voltage running through the rails, with the Battery inserted.

I would suggest to accept sparkmaker's comment  https:#a37338468 as solution.
There was a problem with a RAM or a motherboard. With discharging a notebook, re-seating and replacing a RAM the author eliminated the option of bad RAM, to there remains just that the motherboard is damaged and needs to be replaced.
Sparkmaker has guided the author to the final conclusion with his comments.
