Dell Vostro & HP 65000A Printer

My OS is windows 7 and I have a HP 6500A printer.  I tried to connect this printer using a usb cable, and it failed.  It could print, but the scanner functions failed.  I could not activate the scanner functions from the pc.  After 2 days with HP support, they too gave up.  On this forum it was suggested that I should try other methods.  So I connected by ethernet cable.  I have a verizon FIOS modem which acts as a router and the pc and my laptop are connected by ethernet cables.
I first uninstalled all HP programs for the printer, and then installed again the software.  When the software asked to connect the printer, I selected the ethernet cable, but it could not recognize the connection or see the printer.  I used the same cable for the laptop and it used to connect to the internet, and also connects to the main desktop.
How do I resolve this of the ethernet connection not being able to connect to the HP printer.  Thank u.

You try the following (if this doesn't work I have another solution)

Make sure your printer is connected to your local network download and install the HP software below.

to download the HP Install Network Printer wizard

once you install it follow the these steps:

I hope this helps!
