I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hello,

SharePoint offers several different search options, all of which are services that need to be activated on the SharePoint server.

Which search option is available to you depends on the SharePoint version and license you are running.

I'm not aware that search can be turned on with .NET. If the server has the search service enabled, then you can trigger a search via code developed in .NET.

If you are new to SharePoint, it might be worth getting familiar with the overall architecture of how search works in SharePoint. Here is a link to get you started:

Need to know exactly what version of SharePoint 2010 you have: Foundation, Server, or Search Express.  Each have different search options.

Depending on the file types, SharePoint might not even look at the file contents (PDF for example is not natively included in a crawl).

Can you be more specifc?

So, in what way does .NET come into play? Have you started the Search Service? Have you defined search scopes? What documents are you searching? For PDFs, for example, you will need to install an iFilter.

It's really not clear what your level of knowledge is. If you are unclear about what crawling is, as your question suggests, you need to read up on the SharePoint architecture and the Search Services, as provided in the link I posted in the first comment.

Here is another starting link for FAST search and SharePoint: http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/en-us/product/capabilities/search/Pages/Fast-Search.aspx

Maybe after reading through that, you could phrase your question to be more explicit?
