How do I call a javascript function that is in a script block that is in the body

I have a javascript function in the body of my document, I want to call it fro a button. If the function is in the <head> block it is called fine. But I need it in the <body> so I use some code. Here is the function:
<body onload="doInit()">

    <form id="form1" runat="server">
    <script type="text/javascript">
        function GetErrorDisplayValue() {
            var EDText = <%=getErrorDisplay() %>;

Open in new window

And here is what I use to call it:
<asp:Button id="btnSave" runat="server" Text="Approve" style="Width: 133px" onClientClick="GetErrorDisplayValue()" />

Open in new window

When the function is placed inside the <body> tag I get an error "Object expected".

I need it in the body so I can use <%=getErrorDisplay() %>

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

try to add the missing quotes:

var EDText = "<%=getErrorDisplay() %>";
