Most cost effective way to phone South Africa
My mother lives in SA. She has only a cell phone. I have a land-line and cell, and skype. What is the most cost effective way for both of us to phone each other. I do not want my mother to pay for minutes when I phone her.

Skype is the best if both of you have internet access and Pc at both ends where each of you can create a free Skype account, download and install the Skype app. The app is free and there is no charge for the call. If both of you have a webcam on your desktop or laptopns, you can see each other during the converation also. You can't beat that.
You can also have skype on your mobiles if you have smartphones and call her via that for free.
Other options would be over for example MSN.

They are not stupid. They get you hooked on the basic software and they try to sell you an upgrade for the premuim version with all the additional features normally used by a business.

I would use standard Skype, by Skype software

Will my gran have to have a computer, or do they offer Skype phones that get around not having a computer?
It would be cheapest if she had a smart phone (iPhone, Android, etc). Otherwise, you could call her directly and still stay pretty cheap. If she has an old phone, you might want to price out a new one. Depending how much you call, the savings might cover the cost of the new phone.
