2011 SBS Hyper V

I have installed the Hyper V role on our server running Windows SBS 2011.

I create a Virtual Machine using the defaults, I hae an iso of Windows 2008r2 i want to install on this VM.

I connect to the VM but when i click on start hit problems, mainly "could not initialize"

I have tried a number of alternatives, reducing Ram, HDD Sizes etc.

Any advie/help would be gratefully recived.

thanks

SBS 2011 is not supported as a host for HyperV.  You should not do this.  You need vanilla Server 2008, either standard or enterprise,, then you can VM both the SBS and whatever else you need, according to the resources of the hardware.

If you need SQL, then the SBS Premium Add On is ideal for this...

Makes sense then, Am I best setting up a server with W2K8R2 and then create the VM's ?

R2 or the free "core" which has no GUI.  Remember that Server Standard allows 1+1 installations, where the base holds the hyperV role (only) and the same liscense can be a VM.  But SBS cannot do this, but it can be a VM in the Server Standard base Hyper V.

We have managed to get the HyperV working on SBS when its installed on R2 - however now the RAM is showing as 12Gb but only (3.97Gb Usable) is this due to installing the HyperV on the R2 OS?

thanks
