Installing VMWare Workstation 4 in 64 bit Windows 7

I need help in getting Workstation Guests work in Windows 7 64 bit. I keep getting the error as shown in the attachment. I have rebooted the computer and reinstalled VMWare several times with no luck. I can create guests, but can't launch them to install an operating system.

I did get errors during installation about unsigned drivers and to get signed ones for VMWare. Unfortunately, VMWare does not seem to be interested in providing any support for any of their products. VMWare error pic

Launch vmware from new user account....try it.

User profile might be corrupted.

Please try a supported version of VMware Workstation, version 8.0 is the latest.

version 4.0 is old, out of date and not supported on Windows 7.

Try 6.5 or later.

VMware Workstation went End of Life in April 2003, Windows 7 was released 6 years later in 2009, I would recommend downloading and trying VMware Workstation 7.0 or 8.0 (current version).

VMware Workstation 8.0 (60 day trial, $199)

Unfortunately, VMWare does not seem to be interested in providing any support for any of their products.

VMware provide support for current products, not products which have reached their end of life, and End Of Support ended in 2005 for VMware Workstation 4.0.

It's NOT supported. It will not function on an Operating System, they was not invented at the time of VMware Workstation 4.0 release.

Sorry, it's not the information you wanted.

Check the Released Notes for Supported HOST OS

http://www.vmware.com/support/ws4/doc/releasenotes_ws4.html

Host System Requirements
Windows Host Operating Systems

    Windows Server 2003 Web Edition, Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
    Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 1 (listed versions also supported with no service pack)
    Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 1, 2, 3 or 4, Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 1, 2, 3 or 4, Windows 2000 Advanced Server Service Pack 1, 2, 3 or 4 (listed versions also supported with no service pack)
    Windows NT¿ Workstation 4.0 Service Pack 6a, Windows NT Server 4.0 Service Pack 6a, Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition Service Pack 6

    Caution: Do not install VMware Workstation on a Windows NT 4.0 Server system that is configured as a primary or backup domain controller.

YOUR HOST IS NOT SUPPORTED. THE SOLUTION IS TO USE A SUPPORTED VERSION OF VMWARE WORKSTATION 7.0 OR 8.0.

@hanccocka:

It's false obsolescence if you ask me. I can't understand how they can offer VMWare Fusion for Mac for $89 ($49 sometimes) but they can't offer a mid-tier product for Windows for the same price.

$199 (yeah it's $189 at some outlets or Amazon) is just plain gouging.

or FREE VMware Player, that now also allows you to create VMs

VMware Player 4.0 Free Download

It just lacks some bells and whistles or try

Oracle Virtualbox 4.0

Very, very similar to VMware Workstation for FREE!

@hanccocka:

'can't find WMW 8 for $99 right now. Maybe New Years. However, I doubt I will be supporting their future products. I am trying out VirtualBox right now.

If any VMWare reps or techs or whatever is reading this post, thanks for screwing over longtime Windows and Linux folks. I will not be buying any of your products. You have grown lazy.

That's it for my soapbox. Thanks hanccocka.

Anyone thinking of buying VMWare product my advise is don't.  VMWare has grown lazy over the years and relies on gouging loyal customers to sustain itself.

Support the alternatives to VMWare instead.
