I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You just need to install a certificate on the server. How this should be done depends on the website...

Is the website public-facing, or internal only?

hi
certificate is installed
public website
if the url (without https or http) is run it opens up in http:www.xxx
Is there a way to detect http:// and redirect it to https://  ?

IMO, the best way to do this would be in your IIS or Apache (etc.) config.
Google should be able to give you step by step instructions for your particular web server.

Here's a link that gives step-by-step instructions for IIS7: http://www.iis-aid.com/articles/how_to_guides/redirect_http_to_https_iis_7
