Check you have granted reserve access to VMs in the preferences of VMware Workstation.

reinstall vmwaretools
Okay, if it states rte-install VMware Tools, VMware Tools is probably installed.
Try a fresh install of Ubuntu 32-bit and see if it works differently. I have Ubuntu 32-bit with VMware Workstation 8 on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and it works fine. The purpose of this test is to see whether the problem above is a guest problem or a host problem.

I did have to turn on one of the 64-bit features in the BIOS on my Desktop machine for Vista Business 64-bit to work properly.  ... Thinkpads_User
