I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If you REALLY want to erase everything then read here http://www.zdnet.com/blog/storage/how-to-really-erase-a-hard-drive/129

Secure erase is as good as it gets for free. And THEN afterwards reinstall windows.

I prefer DBan to securely erase HD's. You'll find that tool included on the UBCD:

I also use DBAN (http://www.dban.org/download) to wipe ANY HDD.
I prefer take no risks. It's perfect when you donate a computer.
And because it's a small download (10MB) I prefer to create a boot thumbdrive (a 64MB old will do!) using a tool like these: http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm

This way you can have a thumbdrive ready to wipe any HDD anytime!

Good luck and happy new year.
