I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

What is the network structure? Do you have a proxy server which controls all network traffic?

The question would be, what exactly do you want to monitor and in what way? There are dozen of monitoring-apps for linux that are also free and have a web-interface.
For monitoring we are using Nagios, Icinga and Cacti
For filtering ( I suppose you mean webfiltering) you could setup a proxy like squid and do the filtering in there. Some more details on what your goal is would be helpful to help you.

i want to

block some of the website, facebook game, maybe set time for user can access to fb from what time to what time.

i also want to monitor user activity on their pc such as which website they go, when they log in to email, who they chat with and what chat software they are using.

how much bandwidth they are using.

basically i want to control their traffic usage and filter website that is no use for job purpose and monitor their activities.

Thank you.

My recommendation for your use is untangle:
http://www.untangle.com/
It will probably difficult to decode the whole chat session as these are encypted somehow. Besides its definately forbidden here in germany to do so. But you can find out what chat software is used by enabling triggers in untangle and block those ports to prohibit such chats.
you only need a cheap dual core with 2 GB ram and 80 GB harddisk to have a very good and flexible proxy with untangle. How ever this machine must of course be postioned between the network and the internet so two network cards are needed. When it should run 24/7 invest in a used server. I have one HP DL 360 with 4 GB running for over a year now without any problems.
And yes you have a logfile in untangle to look at the visited websites per device.
Another idea to block potential dangerous websites is the use of openDNS as a censored DNS server.

Untangle is free in the basic version. But by investing some money you can have it blocking all kinds of stuff including phisihing, viruses (Kaspersky) and so on.

can squid to above mention by yohei?
can i block games and monitor user activity with untangle basic?

What is yohei? :/

Yes, squid can block pages by name/context/viruses(if you connect clamav to squid) etc
http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/web_blocking_squid
http://linuxstep.wordpress.com/step-by-step-configuration-squid-to-block-streaming-media-online/

you can also connect squid and dansguardian to filter content- very good solution
http://dansguardian.org/

I didn't try to see what pages are accessed by users because in my country it is not allowed but for suer it is possible in squid. You just need to look into log files:
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-linux-unix-view-squid-log-files/
or use some tool to do that:

Well Yohei is my Nickname here....:)
Ok Yes Untangle basic is already very complete. You have already the CLAMAV Antivirus and URL filtering included. The packages where you have to pay for include more professional services like the mentioned kaspersky antivirus and web filtering based on a huge database. Very convenient but not necessarily needed. Furthermore there is one nice feature: The events of all those modules is summarized in a daily, weekly and monthly report as a pdf. So you get a nicely formatted report automatically sent to your email-address(es). Look at their webpage to get an impression.
Its a question of time you want to invest in this topic. The squid solution is good but you will need to invest much more time to understand, install and configure evrything. Especially when you want to combine several packages like rysic suggested. And then you still have no reporting over all modules and programs installed, which means you have to write your own logfile report or look at all logfiles seperately. And Untangle is linux based which means you can play around using squid later on if you think you want even more control and information,

Yes, you are right, but you must pay for untangle a lot ;) That is main criteria I think in choosing between them :)

Hi rysic. Correct for the so called professional services ! I never paid anything and it is very complete. Those addons are not needed at all in a small company. And even when buying the premium allin package: compare it to content aware firewalls like watchguard and so on. They cost a lot more money.
Basically its linux so you can modifiy it afterwards if you need to. I never missed anything, and it runs 24/7 without any glitches out of the box......The Know-How to make all those features working smooth on a machine is tremendous if done manually...Here it is a question of time.

may i know how many pcs in a company consider as small company, medium company and big company in IT perspective. Thank you.
0
Frank MayerTechnical Voip SupportCommented:
that is probably a personal preference. I would say 1-10 is small
11-50 medium and everything more is big.
This influences what PC you will use as a gateway(proxy). i have a HP dl360 with 4 gb ram and 2x73 GB
HD dual core xeon and around 12 devices. it idles most of the time even when there is a lot of internet traffic. The limiting factor will probably be your used internet connection not the PC or any other component.
