Word 2007 hangs when open. When printers are right click then Windows Explorer hangs.

Either opening a Word document or launching Word will hang the software. Get message "Do you want to open in Safe Mode" Selecting yes will result in Office running install but the results after the attempted fix are another software hang. Opening Excel or Outlook does not cause a hang.

Difficult to open Devices and Printers. If Devices and Printers can be opened then right clicking either an Xerox 7655 or HP Officejet 6500 results in a hang.

Possible HDD failure. I would check it. Also, open Cmd.exe and run sfc /scannow.
What is the event log saying? Have you checked tge action center?

This can be a number of issues.
On thing I have found in the past is that corrupt printer drivers can cause issues with office applications.
try deleting all printers and reinstalling the drivers.
You also may have a problem with your document template ( normal.dot)
you may want to rename that file (do a  windows search).
Let me know how it goes.

According to Windows 7, hard drive is ExcelStor Tech J8160S. Downloaded Etest CD image and burned to CD. Ran Etest v4.50 and it could not find the drive. Ran Dell diagnostics from the boot menu and ExcelStor Tech J8160S passed.

Ran sfc /scannow and that passed (ps have to run as administrator).

There is nothing in the Action Center.

The problem shows up when a different user is logged on.

Right now I would believe a printer driver is involved. I ran the Microsoft fixit (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541) and it hung on checking the default printer. If I can not get Devices and Printers to open, then how do I remove a driver driver?

I am not seeing anything useful in the event logs.
I do not believe Normal.dot is invovled as I can open Word in Windows safe mode.

Put the computer in clean boot mode and then try opening devices and printers.

Also try opening device and printers in safe mode with networking.

Clean boot process

Start-type - msconfig- click on startup tab- click disable all...then click services tab- put a check on hide all microsoft services ...and then click disable all....click ok and then restart the computer in normal mode.

If everything works fine in clean boot then enable five startup items and services at a time to find the faulty software.

The msconfig may help for the Dell Webcam problem ( I have not worked on Latitude ST yet) but in this case disabling Startup and all non-Microsoft services had no effect.. I gone back and put things back in place.

In the case of opening devices and printers in safe mode, I had tried that just to remove the printers and end up with no printers displayed.

I tried to run (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541) but nothing happened.
I found http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/how-do-i-remove-all-of-the-printer-driver-in/ba22df68-1751-48f2-94c9-30cb3317b1ac How do i Remove ALL of the printer driver in windows 7? That referred me to an older link http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm. I decided not to mess with the registry first and started step 8 with modifications:
8.      open a Command Prompt window
9.      key the commands
net stop spooler
net start spooler
10.      open Windows Explorer

11.      navigate to %systemroot%\system32\spool\printers\ and delete any files there. By default, this is where the print spooler stores print files. At this point, I spotted step 14 and then did net stop spooler
12.      navigate to %systemroot%\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86 (%systemroot% is usually Windows, but it might be winnt or something else; this is set when the OS is installed).
13.      inside w32x86, there will be folders with the names 2 and 3 (one or more of these may be absent - not a problem)
delete all of the files and sub-folders in each of the 2 and 3 folders, but not the folders themselves
inside w32x86, there may be other folders with names starting with "hewlett_packard", "hphp" or something else; delete these folders also Deleted the HPofficejet 6500.
14.      restart the print spooler (see steps 8 and 9 above) Did net start spooler
Rebooted.
That got me Word to open and Devices and Printers to open. Now I have to bring the computer back to it's location to see if printers can be made to work. (Took the computer with me last night)
