Cannot browse storage device with Windows Explore but can access with Remote Desktop

We have a 4TB LaCie Ethernet Disk NAS device that we use for file storage.  Its operating system is Windows Embedded 6.3.0.
Recently we have been experiencing odd trouble accessing it.  Suddenly, for no apparent reason, we are unable to access it through Windows explorer using the name or the IP address.  Yet we can ping it by name and IP successfully.  When this happens we can also access it by remote desktop.  After rebooting the device using remote desktop it will function properly for one or more hours before repeating the pattern.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

First make sure your backups are fine. Then check whether there is a firmware update available for the device.

Unfortunately my backups are not fine right now.  It is a storage device for our artist's files and uses 1.7 TB disk space.  It takes most of a weekend to back up and last weekend we had an UPS failure that interrupted the backup.  (This is unrelated to the present problem as the explore problem started two weeks ago and no other machine is experiencing this problem. )
So the first and most important thing is to get the data backed up. After that look at getting the NAS running properly. It isn't worth risking your data trying repairs.
