Backing up VM's with pass through disks

I've recently created a Hyper-V cluster with 6 VM's - 3 of which use pass through disks.

I would normally use Backup Exec to cover all backups, but I read it can't backup machines with pass throughs - it's also quite expensive!

ANy suggestions on

1. Alternative backup solutions for Virtual Machines (cluster/CSV)
2. Methods to backup the machines with pass through disks attached (no need to backup ANY of the data on the pass through disk itself, just the VM)

You are right, a pass-through disk cannot be backed up from the Hyper-V host.

You can still back up the VM (its VHD disks) using a software on the host – it will skip the pass-through disks and generate some errors in the log but the backup will be valid.

If you care about the data on those pass-through disks you need to back them up from within the VM. I use Windows Server Backup to back the data on alternative network location and then I use my old favourite backup software to back up the backup files created by WSB on tapes: it saves me a lot of money in licence fees because I take a back up from one old server only instead of several new servers (my old software doesn’t support Hyper-V).

1 - If you're a SAN then there are definitely options here:  LUN snapshotting, replication, etc.  We can snapshot LUNs with our SAN and mount the backups to the host Backup Exec server as a local disk for normal backup.
2 - The VMs could possibly use Microsoft's built in Backup program.  This can be scheduled just like Backup Exec and it's free.
