"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

XML is just a string of data.  You can store it on your server in any variable that is of the data type "string".

You can use file_get_contents() to acquire XML from a web service.  The function returns a string and you can put that into a variable...
$xml = file_get_contents('http://laprbass.com/RAY_REST_get_last_name.php?key=ABC&resp=XML&name=Ray');
