The home edition has some restrictions.

On the microsoft website the home edition is not supported by sql 2008 R2

It seems that the main difference is the possibility to login on a windows domain.

It is possible to install a developer edition on the home edition

many thanks for the feedback...

would installing sp3 make any difference?

what about installing sql 2008.....or is that the same as sql 2008 r2
Makes no difference sp3 or not.

On the top of the website you can switch sql version and see the results for sql 2008

It mainly the difference between professional and home edition.
The developer edition is for almost all os versions.

For example xp professional is possible with sql 2008R2.
