I wear a lot of hats...

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The home edition has some restrictions.

On the microsoft website the home edition is not supported by sql 2008 R2
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx

It seems that the main difference is the possibility to login on a windows domain.

It is possible to install a developer edition on the home edition

Makes no difference sp3 or not.

On the top of the website you can switch sql version and see the results for sql 2008
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx

It mainly the difference between professional and home edition.
The developer edition is for almost all os versions.

For example xp professional is possible with sql 2008R2.
