"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The compression something the Web-server controls.

See this page ,

<a href="http://betterexplained.com/articles/how-to-optimize-your-site-with-gzip-compression/">
Here</a>

It will explain in detail.

If you are on a shared host contact the Hosting company and see if they use any form of compression.

Your are mistaken, this does work with .html files. Both the browser and the server need to support gzip compression for this to work. This needs t be configured in apache or IIS web server.

I suggest actually reading the link that selvol posted for more details.

once again, are you sure you read the page and didnt just skim it?
add the following to your config file or .htaccess:

AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/plain
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/css
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/xhtml+xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/rss+xml
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/javascript
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-javascript

which compresses HTML, plain text, XML, CSS and JavaScript
