Question on wireless controller 4400

Hi , i am configuring  two WLANs one secure and one open.  My question is why do i need to create a vlan for each wlan ? i.e vln 5 for the open wlan and vlan 6 for the secure ? Do i need to assign a subnet on each of these vlans ?
I understand the concept of the vlan when it comes to the AP devices.  But i am not sure about the vlans when it comes to the actual wlans.

any info would be apprecaited.

So the open vlan can only go to the Internet and not bounce all vet your secure network.
