Broken screen or Graphics card?
Hi all
Client called me up with an issue, and Im not sure if its the screen that is broken or the graphics card.
Laptop is a HP Pavilion DV6 (Out of Warranty).
Apparently was working on it, shut the lid for a break, came back nd the screen is completely white.
External monitor connected via D-Sub works, however HDMI seems to be dead also.
I hear the DV6 Graphics are embedded onto the motherboard, so I want to be fairy certain which it is before looking for fixes.

So definately the screen then?
I am HP DV4 and seen HDMI does not work good with most of Monitors so for me sounds like screen.
Waiting to see if any other hardware expert reply would be good idea too if you have to drive miles away for it.

Access to the laptop will not be too difficult, but I want to be as sure as I can before advising client to buy replacement parts!
Since the external video works, the Graphics card is ok. If the screen is showing white, then the backlight is working. This suggests that the LCD panel is still in sleep mode.
Before going out to buy new parts or opening it up and checking the cables, you could have you client try opening and closing the lid several times. I had several HP nc6000 and IBM thinkpads do that on me when they got older and trying to trigger the screen sleep a few times fixed it. If you know where the trigger button is on the laptop, you could just push it too. It will become more frequent as it ages too.

Will pass this info on!
I guess the preinstalled graphics adapter may be somewhat broken. actually it depends . Is your client using VGA output now? Because the systems default screen adapter and hdmi adapter CAN be dead but the VGA can still run because they are not on the exact same place at least they are using different part of the motherboard however thy usually sit near eachother.

Ok, I have the laptop in front of me now.
It flicks from total black to 75% black with 25% white stripe on right hand side, to total white randomly.
Opening and closing the lid does nothing.
External VGA works.

maybe there is a connection problem on the inside of the computer. the displays cable may have been moving out from it's place.. take a look at it .

I wouldnt know what I am looking at to be honest.
Think I will just send it off to HP for an Out of Warranty repair.
