AS/400 Printing from Twinax

We have a IBM 4230 that used to be hooked up to the Twinax controller in our server room. The problem I am running into is that I can’t not sure how it was hooked up. I have attached two pictures one of the panel and where the port that the printer was hooked up to. The printer says its ready but I don’t see it listed in WRKWTR as an active printer. The printer PRT020706 is the one I am looking to get working.

Twinax controllers are designed to allow up to 8 devices to be daisy-chained together on a single twinax controller port.  Twinax-to-twisted pair wiring systems implement this daisy-chaining internally in the twisted-pair hub (I mention this because twinax to twisted-pair hubs are very common).

This means that each twinax device has to have a unique address.  Addressing a twinax device is accomplished through either a setup menu on the control panel (or on-screen with a twinax terminal), or by setting switches within the device or on the device's back panel.  The operator's manual that came with your device will explain how to set the address from 0-7.

If you need to track down a free address, on the AS/400, you can print out a report that shows what device is attached to what port using the PRTDEVADR command.  This will show you. port by port, what is attached to a given controller, and what the twinax address of each device is.

If the device is already configured, you should be able to use WRKCFGSTS *DEV *PRT command to see the printer change status when you power the device off and refresh the screen.  If the device isn't configured, it will automatically configure itself if the system value QAUTOCFG is set to '1'.  WRKSYSVAL QAUTOCFG to view and change this value.

If the device auto-configures, you'll get a message on the QSYSOPR message queue, I seem to recall.  (DSPMSG QSYSOPR)  The message will contain the device name.  Of course, it will also pop up on the WRKCFGSTS screen when you refresh (F5).

Once the device is showing up on WRKCFGSTS in VARIED ON status, you can start printing using the STRPRTWTR command.

With twinax printers, I start at the printer and work backwards:

1) Plugged in and powered on.
2) Properly connected to twinax controller using a known good cable.
3) Configured on a free twinax address. (Two devices on the same address will give you intermittent failures on both devices, or the inability to use either device.)
3) READY status on the front panel of the printer.
4) VARIED ON status on WRKCFGSTS screen.
5) Writer job started on WRKWTR screen.
