AIX 5.3 Support
Hi All,
We are currently running AIX 5.3 TL 8 and understand standard support for 5.3 ends Apr 2012 and beyond that, IBM will provide extended support. I have the following questions:
1. Will extended support depend on the TL level or will be provided irrespective of the TL.
2. What is the difference between standard and extended support? As I understand, IBM will provide fixes for both standard and extended support.
3. Is there a compelling reason to move from TL 8 to TL 12?
Thanks.

Thanks a lot Kerem for your reply. It answered all my queries. I followed the link that you provided, but it says that you should be running TL09 SP7 to receive "regular support". So I am assuming that anything before this will still get extended support. Is this correct?
In fact This is the minimum level they suggest you to offer support. Standard Suppoort/Exdended support thing is just a matter of time.. If the release is within 6 years of its original release you've got cheaper (compared to extended) "standard" support. If the release is within 10 years of its original release but older than 6 years you have "more expensive" extended support. It is not about in which release you're. So they will suggest you to TL09 SP7 regardless of you're having standard or extended support. Since this is the minimum level they offer support.
Of course it here's a stipulation that you can't go to TL09 SP 7 you can have custom support for your current release but it would be much much expensive because this is a custom service for you.. In this case you2ll need to contact your IBM representative under what conditions they can offer you this service and the cost.
Cheers,
K.

Unix is a multitasking, multi-user computer operating system originally developed in 1969 at Bell Labs. Today, it is a modern OS with many commercial flavors and licensees, including FreeBSD, Hewlett-Packard’s UX, IBM AIX and Apple Mac OS-X. Apart from its command-line interface, most UNIX variations support the standardized X Window System for GUIs, with the exception of the Mac OS, which uses a proprietary system.
